Lucky Horseshoe Neighborhood Association in South Louisville Formed

LOUISVILLE (April 20, 2009) – The Department of Neighborhoods is pleased to announce a newly formed neighborhood association, Lucky Horseshoe Neighborhood Association in South Louisville near Churchill Downs. Their monthly meetings are held every third Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the VFW Post located at 992 Longfield Avenue. Upcoming meetings are on April 21, May 19 and June 16.

The group approached the Louisville Department of Neighborhoods in August of 2008 about starting a new neighborhood association. They are working to build a strong neighborhood and hope to get all of their residents involved. They have an active neighborhood watch club within their organization. David Tate was elected as the interim president.

“Many new neighborhood associations form after neighbors connect with each other through the Neighborhood Watch program. It all starts with safety first,” Mayor Jerry Abramson said. “We congratulate the Lucky Horseshoe Neighborhood Association on their formation.”

“Our community is only as strong as our neighborhoods and I am pleased that another neighborhood in District 15 has organized. I look forward to working with the members Lucky Horseshoe,” said Councilwoman Marianne Butler. Lucky Horseshoe Neighborhood Association is located in District 15 Metro Council District of Marianne Butler, who helped the group get started.

Lucky Horseshoe Neighborhood Association is located near Churchill Downs in South Louisville. Boundaries are Bunton and Central Avenue (north), Longfield Avenue (south), Taylor Boulevard (west) and 3rd Street (east).

“Building new neighborhood association is at the heart of our mission for building a strong community block by block,” said Melissa Mershon, director of the Department of Neighborhoods. “By becoming organized, new groups are empowered to make their neighborhood safe, strong and vibrant.”

The Louisville Metro Department of Neighborhoods builds community and empowers neighborhood residents with affordable training on a variety of topics year-round. The Community Outreach Liaisons are a team within the Department of Neighborhoods with a primary goal to connect neighborhood groups with government and empower neighborhoods with community-building tools. They work with groups to develop new associations or help existing groups revitalize. Kyle Sawyer-Dailey was the liaison that assisted Lucky Horseshoe Neighborhood Association. It takes about six months for a neighborhood association to be formed. There are over 200 active neighborhood and homeowners associations in Louisville.
