Organizers of the Lucky Horseshoe Neighborhood Association say they aren't expecting good fortune to fall into their laps.

Instead, they want to work with city government and nearby Churchill Downs to make their community a better place.

Lucky Horseshoe is an outgrowth of the Queen Avenue Block Watch, organized in 2005. Members of the block watch approached the city's department of neighborhoods last August to begin the formal process of starting a neighborhood association.

Its boundaries are Burton and Central avenues to the north, Longfield Avenue to the south, Taylor Boulevard to the west and Third Street to the east.

The group operates well as a block watch but felt networking was important to accomplish more long-range goals for the area, such as handling traffic and safety concerns, said Kim Worth, the association's secretary.

"We want to get help with beautification, and when the city has neighborhood summits, conferences and other meetings for neighborhood leaders, we can hopefully get help with registration," she said. "And we want people to really get out and get to know each other."

President Dave Tate said that after seeing another neighborhood group dissolve, the Lucky Horseshoe group's board is determined to make it easy for residents to both join and participate.

"I went to one meeting and didn't like what I saw," Tate said of the now-defunct South Louisville Neighborhood Association. "We're going to make sure all of our I's are dotted and all our T's are crossed."
