Third annual awards celebrate volunteerism, civic leadership
New ceremony date/location: Nov. 15, Kentucky International Convention Center
LOUISVILLE (September 26, 2008) – Mayor Jerry Abramson will honor 28 neighbors selected for the 2008 Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award this fall at the Mayor’s Neighborhood Summit held on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the Kentucky International Convention Center located downtown at 221 S. Fourth Street. This is the third year for the awards, which honor citizens who put extra effort into helping neighbors and improving their neighborhoods.
“These good neighbors help put the “possibility” into Possibility City by reaching out to improve their neighborhoods and help their fellow neighbors,” Abramson said. “Their simple acts of kindness inspire us and demonstrate that we all can do something to make Louisville an even better city.”
Six panels of community leaders selected the 28 winners from among more than 150 nominees. Panelists chose representatives based on demonstration of good citizenship and participation in volunteer activities.
The award recipients include neighbors who mow grass for elderly or disabled neighbors, translate for non-English speaking neighbors and help neighborhood boy scouts earn merit and Eagle Scout badges. Others have built Habitat for Humanity homes, created a Farmer’s Market on their block, and started a special kindergarten for autistic children. They’ve also founded neighborhood associations and Neighborhood Watch programs, and helped organize cleanups and plant trees along their streets.
Mayor Abramson and the Department of Neighborhoods will honor the recipients during a ceremony at the Mayor’s Neighborhood Summit on Saturday, November 15 at the Kentucky International Convention Center located at 221 S. Fourth Street. Award recipients will be presented with plaques made by Louisville Stoneware that can be displayed on the outside of their homes. The Mayor’s Summit is a one day training and networking for residents wanting to improve and strengthen their community.
