This program strives to recognize those special citizens who make a difference in our community without seeking or receiving recognition for their service – the unsung heroes. The Mayor’s Good Neighbor Award is a way of thanking those citizens who are committed to preserving, maintaining and improving the quality of life in their neighborhoods and our community. Creating Safer Neighborhoods
Louisville Metro Police Department
Crime Prevention Strategies
We need your help. In the past, police officers responded to crimes after they had already been committed. Now we want your help in preventing crimes before they occur. We need everyone in our community to take an active role in learning how to stop a crime before it happens. One way you can take an active role in solving and preventing crime is by using the Metro Police’s tip line, 574-LMPD.

Home and Neighborhood Safety

Our neighborhoods are the bedrock of our society and everyone should take personal ownership of their own neighborhood in order to prevent crime from occurring to control crime. Their certain steps we can all take to make our neighborhoods and homes safer;

  • Organize neighborhood cleanup days to send the message that your community is closed to thieves, vandals, and loiterers.
  • If you feel the need for increased police patrol contact your local LMPD Division and request extra patrol.
  • Sponsor a Neighborhood Block Watch to give the police an extra set of eyes in your neighborhood.
  • Be sure the outside doors of your home or business have strong deadbolt locks.
  • Keep spare keys with a trusted neighbor or nearby shopkeeper, not under a doormat or planter, on a ledge, or in the mailbox.
  • Lock gates, garage doors, and shed doors after every use.
  • Illuminate or eliminate places an intruder might hide: the spaces between trees or shrubbery, stairwells, alleys, hallways, and entryways.
  • Set timers on lights when you’re away from home or your business is closed so it appears to be occupied.
  • Keep your bike and sports equipment inside the house when they’re not in use.
  • Avoid confrontations with burglars.

Social Change Book Club 2.0
The June book is The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People Are Changing the World by Paul H. Ray, Ph.D. and Sherry Ruth Anderson, Ph.D. There is a growing movement involving about hundred million people in the USA and Europe, weaving a new cultural fabric, reframing how we see the world today. They are called the Cultural Creatives, a term coined by Paul Ray (Ph.D. in sociology). These activists - schoolteachers, artists, spiritual guides and scientists - are questioning the unspoken assumptions of the old culture, opening up new insights and forging creativity in people's lives from grass root levels. There is growing evidence that these efforts are changing the society in many ways. Although this book was first published in 2000, it seems to have foreseen the current cultural shifts.
