Walk on the Waterfront to be Held Thursday May 20

Tuesday May 18, 2010

The Department of Public Health and Wellness and the Jefferson County Health Promotion Schools of Excellence will hold the thirteenth annual Walk on the Waterfront on Thursday May 20 beginning at 10:30 a.m.

More than 4,200 school children will join with Public Health and Wellness staff members on the two-mile hike from in front of Public Health and Wellness Headquarters at 400 E. Gray St., through Louisville Streets and along the Ohio River in scenic Waterfront Park. Participating schools include Churchill Park, Dawson-Orman, Eisenhower, Foster, Greathouse, Hazelwood, Indian Trail, Johnsontown, Kerrick, Lowe, Semple, Shacklette, Shawnee High, Waller-Williams, Wellington and Wheatley.

Public Health and Wellness Director Dr. Adewale Troutman will lead the walk. Also on hand will be Coach Mozziz DeWalt a Louisville resident who lost more than 100 pounds on the NBC reality show “The Biggest Loser.”

Walk on the Waterfront promotes walking as a fun, healthy activity for children and adults. It also honors the work of public health. There will be free tee-shirts, mascots, music and healthy snacks. Walk on the Waterfront is a Mayor’s Healthy Hometown event.

New this year will be a children’s fair sponsored by the Metro Community Action Partnership to be held at the conclusion of the Walk in Waterfront Park. The children’s fair will feature jugglers, clowns, a fire engine and non-competitive games.

Thursday May 20 will also mark the first day of this year’s Gray Street Farmers market, which will be held at 400 E. Gray St. on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. from May 20 to October 28. Since the market opening coincides with Walk on the Waterfront, four vendors will be set up from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. to help provide an opportunity for students and teachers to talk with farmers about where their food comes from. Additional vendors will set up once the walk begins and Gray St. has been cleared of walkers.
