New Save-A-Lot Provides Necessary Retail Services In South Central Neighborhoods

Save-A-Lot one of 150 businesses helped by Mayor’s COOL program LOUISVILLE (Oct. 14, 2005) - Mayor Jerry Abramson announced today that shopping for groceries and other retail items has just become easier in the Beechmont and Hazelwood neighborhoods, with the opening of the Save-A-Lot grocery store at Hazelwood Shopping Center, 4148 Taylor Boulevard.

“New life is being breathed back into Hazelwood Shopping Center after decades of decline,” said Abramson. “The addition of two retail outlets, Family Dollar and Save-A-Lot, is a coup to the residents of these neighborhoods whose quality of life will be enhanced with convenient and accessible services.”

Save-A-Lot, one of the nation’s largest grocery chains, caters to households earning less than $35,000 a year, by stocking fewer brands and sizes of an item and using its own brand in most cases.

City government started working to revitalize the Hazelwood Shopping Center in the late 1990s, but the most significant public improvements began last year when Steve and Susan Kute purchased half of the center. Their daughter, Jenny and her husband, Craig Oeswein, own and operate the grocery store.
The Metro Development Authority, metro government’s economic development arm, provided the store owners a $100,000 forgivable retail loan and a $100,000 METCO gap-financing loan. MDA also provided the shopping-center owners $85,000 in façade and accessibility loans for infrastructure improvements. The $285,000 metro-government investment resulted in a $2 million investment in the area by the Kute family.

“We are excited to be here and have received such a welcoming reception from the community,” said Steve Kute, an owner of Hazelwood Shopping Center. “We will provide high-quality retail items and outstanding service and value for this neighborhood.”

Abramson said that Save-A-Lot is one of many neighborhood businesses that have benefited from his COOL - Corridors of Opportunity in Louisville - program. The mayor began COOL in 2003 to assist business-owners and developers with locating retail services in available sites.

“Convenient retail services help improve the quality of life for a neighborhood, and for our whole community,” said Abramson. “Our COOL program has been working along the Taylor Boulevards, the Preston Highways, the Dixie Highways, the Shelbyville Roads and other key corridors to help support the vibrancy of our hometown’s neighborhoods.”

In two years, COOL has successfully helped 150 businesses either open or expand throughout Louisville, committing more than $6.5 million to businesses and neighborhoods. The investment includes more than $2 million in infrastructure improvements along major retail corridors and $4.6 million in loans to businesses.

Twenty-three expansions of existing retail businesses and 127 new retail businesses have hired 2,500 employees, adding to what is already the largest growing business sector in Louisville. In Louisville, the retail sector alone contributes about $1.3 billion in payroll annually, with an average wage of about $10.35 per hour.
