New Year's Day, King Holidays Affect Garbage Collection In The Urban Services District

Thursday December 22, 2011

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (December 22, 2011 ) – The official New Year’s Day holiday on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 will affect garbage, recycling and yard waste collection for some residents in the Urban Services District (old city limits).

Typically, following a Monday holiday trash collection rolls over on a “day delay”, which means citizens’ service takes place a day later than usual. (Example: Residents who normally have their garbage collected on Monday have a Tuesday collection day.)

The delayed pick-up system creates a Tuesday-Saturday schedule for workers the week following a holiday, resulting in overtime for weekend shifts.

After the observance of the 2012 New Year’s Day holiday, crews will resume their normal workweek shifts, eliminating weekend overtime and creating an estimated savings of $25,000.

This means that there will be no collection for those who have Monday pickup. Pickup for garbage, recycling and yard waste the rest of the week will be on the normal collection day.

There will also be no “day delay” pick-up for garbage, recycling or yard waste collection in the Urban Services District following the official observance of Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan. 16, 2011, resulting in another $25,000 in overtime savings, for a total of $50,000.

There will be no collection for those who have Monday pickup. Collection for garbage, recycling and yard waste the rest of the week will be on the normal collection day.

“By eliminating weekend overtime following these two holidays, we can create significant savings.” Metro Public Works Director Ted Pullen said. “This is a way to stretch our budget dollars without too much disruption to resident services.”

Garbage, recycling and yard waste collection will operate on a “day delay” pick-up following the official observance of Christmas Day on Monday, Dec. 26, 2011.

Residents outside the Urban Services District should contact their private waste hauler for their holiday schedule.

Metro Public Works also reminds citizens in the Urban Services District that new collection routes will begin when regular service resumes on Monday, Jan. 9th. Mailers indicating trash, recycling and yard waste collection dates for 2012 were sent out to all Urban Services District residents earlier this month.
