MAYOR'S ADOPT-A-PARK INITIATIVE GROWS TO INCLUDE FOUR NEW PARKS
LOUISVILLE (April 15, 2005) – Citizens who visit four local parks will soon notice improvements as a result of the Mayor’s Adopt-A-Park program, Mayor Jerry Abramson announced today. Four new adoption agreements with area organizations bring to eight the total number of local parks adopted since the program’s inception.
The park adoptions announced today are:
- Boone Square Park (20th and Rowan streets; 4 acres), adopted by Portland NOW;
- Central Park (Fourth Street and Park Avenue; 17 acres), adopted by Old Louisville Neighborhood Council;
- Nelson Hornbeck Park (Fairdale Road near Tin Dor Way; 18 acres), adopted by Fairdale High School; and
- Magnolia Park (Second Street near Magnolia Avenue; less than an acre), adopted by Second Street Neighborhood Association.
Those organizations will work with Metro Parks – and local businesses, when appropriate – on park improvement and beautification projects, such as landscaping, mulching, painting, controlled application of pesticides and leaf collection.
Abramson launched the Adopt-A-Park program just over one year ago. “Volunteering to improve our parks is a great investment in our future. It’s wonderful to see those who benefit the most from these neighborhood parks working hand-in-hand with us to ensure that our parks reach their full potential. We’ll continue to build these public-private partnerships at every opportunity as we strive to create a City of Parks,” Abramson said, referring to his initiative to develop thousands of new acres of park land while strengthening existing parks.
Parks that have already been adopted are Irish Hill, Iroquois and Shelby parks, along with Patterson Playground. Business and civic groups that would like to become part of the Mayor’s Adopt-A-Park program should contact Shane Stuber, marketing and development officer for Metro Parks, at 502/456-1857.
