Monday May 3, 2010

Register for Bike to Work Day held May 21st

LOUISVILLE (May 3, 2010) –
Tired of the same old drive into work? Leave your vehicle parked at home this May, get on your bike, and ride to work with others for Bike to Work Month and Bike to Work Day 2010!

Everyone, from expert cyclists to beginners, is encouraged to sign up for Bike to Work Day 2010 on May 21st and come to the celebration that day at 4th Street Live! Last year, nearly 600 people registered, 200 of which were first time riders. The city’s Bike Louisville program hopes to have 800 riders sign up this year.

Throughout May there are Meet & Ride events planned in three Louisville locations to allow bikers to get comfortable commuting and provide a way to meet other bikers in their neighborhoods.

Meet & Ride dates/times:

  • Practice ride, Saturday, May 8 at 10 a.m.
  • Practice ride, Friday May 14 at 7 a.m.
  • Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 21st at 7 a.m.

Meet & Ride locations:

Seneca Park  - Meet at the basketball court parking lot, west of the tennis courts. Ride downtown to 4th Street Live.

Iroquois Park - Meet at the Amphitheater parking lot. Ride downtown to 4th Street Live.

Shawnee Park - Meet at the Southwestern and Broadway entrance. Ride downtown to 4th Street Live.

Each location has parking for those who plan to park and ride. Riders must have a helmet.

This year there is a Commuter Challenge going on where organizations can form teams and compete against others for prizes. There are also free bike safety classes in May from Bicycling for Louisville and the Louisville Bicycle Club to teach riders how to feel more confident and increase their safety riding in town.

Bike to Work Day Celebration at 4th Street Live on Friday, May 21
Join Bike Louisville and WFPK’s 91.9 for the Bike to Work Day 2010 celebration at Fourth Street Live! beginning at noon on May 21st. Meet up with other commuters, learn more about bicycle commuting, visit with vendors and win prizes. One lucky winner will take home a new Trek 7000 commuting bike, with packs and racks, no purchase necessary.

To encourage riders to leave their cars behind, all local Heine Brothers’ Coffee and Java Brewing Company locations will be giving away a free cup of coffee if you’re on your bike to work on Friday, May 21st!
