County Attorney University of Louisville Hospital and U of L reach agreement on merger documents
Tuesday December 13, 2011
Mike O’Connell, County Attorney, announced today an agreement for release of documents relating to the proposed merger of University of Louisville Hospital, St. Joseph Health System, and Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s HealthCare. University of Louisville and University of Louisville Hospital will release the documents by Thursday, December 15, 2011.
O’Connell filed suits seeking the release of public records held by the University of Louisville and University of Louisville Hospital regarding the merger, which he had requested in November under the Kentucky Open Records Act. In return for the documents, he agrees to dismissal of those suits from Circuit Court Division 10.
“This agreement achieves my purpose – it will permit the public to be informed about the details of this transaction,” O’Connell said. “I have engaged a nationally recognized hospital merger expert for his review and comment on the documents.”
“Since I raised these questions before the court, many people have shared their concerns about the merger, chiefly the change in University Hospital’s mission as a community safety-net, control by an out-of-state corporation and the impact of religious doctrine on medical decisions,” said O’Connell. “These are all legitimate, important concerns which I hope today’s agreement may help answer.”
According to CHI and other sources, the cost of the merger will be $320,000,000 and result in CHI holding majority control of the hospitals. The process requires Governor Beshear’s approval.
