Counciwoman Flood kicks off 2009 "Doing Our Part from the Heart"

Monday February 16, 2009

Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D-24) is once again asking for community help for a very special group of people: the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who are still serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 2009 ‘Doing our Part from the Heart” campaign is officially underway.

“We may have a new President and problems with the economy,” said Flood. “But we should not forget some very brave men and women who are still doing their duty. They are in faraway lands and need our help.”

The generosity of hundreds of people made possible 400 boxes of personal items delivered to US troops.

“We began asking for some very basic things back in 2007, toothpaste, lotions and snacks,” says Flood. “Many service people still do not have easy access to buying the simple things we take for granted.”

Joining Flood again for this year’s campaign is the Okolona Business Association, the Okolona Fire Department, Republic Bank and Interlink Counseling Service Inc. The campaign began on Monday, February 16th and ends March 31st. Like last year, Interlink will man drop off points throughout the Okolona area.

Republic Bank will continue its partnership with the effort by setting up an account to accept all monetary donations to cover postage for the items going to Iraq. Donations can also be deposited at any Republic Bank. Make sure to note on the check “From the Heart” account.

“Even the smallest contribution will help,” said Flood “I am confident the good people of Okolona, Metro Louisville and the Commonwealth of Kentucky will not let us down.”

In 2007, “Doing Our Part packed 240 boxes off to soldiers in the United States, Iraq and Afghanistan. When the campaign ended last year, the number of boxes climbed to 400.

Other sponsors of this year’s campaign are Scheller’s Fitness & Cycling, Jefferson Mall Customer Service Center, Lamkin Wealth Management, Allegra Print & Imaging, BC Roosters and Ong’s Urgent Care.

“Last year, bad winter weather didn’t slow us down,” says Flood. “I am grateful that we have a giving community and we need to remind everyone, these folks are still there and they still need our support.”
