Brightside Honors Wiche Adult Winner

Mayor Jerry Abramson, Brightside and the Fred Wiche family honored Americana Community Center with the Brightside Fred Wiche Award in the adult division at the Mayor’s Neighborhood Summit today. The award continues Fred Wiche’s legacy of promoting beautification and environmental consciousness by recognizing local stewards who have a commitment to preserve and improve the environment.

Americana Community Center earned the adult division award for their community garden project now in its third year of operation. The garden is used by neighborhood residents who live near Americana and include Americana Community Center is located in Louisville’s south end located within a community of refugees, immigrants and U.S. born families. Fred’s life impacted so many Louisville residents, and now, in 2008, his legacy has global reach, positively impacting the lives of our newest residents from places like, Bosnia, Sudan, Liberia, Guatemala, Burma, and Vietnam, just to name a few.

The Adult Award recognizes the efforts of an individual or group in the Kentuckiana region whose environmental stewardship improves their neighborhood or community. The adult award is open to residents and groups from the Kentucky counties of Jefferson, Bullitt, Shelby and Oldham; and Indiana counties of Floyd, Clark and Harrison. Americana Community Center received a personalized piece of garden art sculpted by local artist Wyatt Gragg.

Brightside is Louisville’s non-profit organization dedicated to promoting environmental stewardship and beautification. The school division award recipients will be announced in December.
