County Attorney's Drug Court Graduates 11

Tuesday May 23, 2006

In observance of National Drug Court Month, the Jefferson County Attorney’s Drug Court celebrated its 13th Anniversary with a graduation of 11 program participants today. Each has successfully completed the minimum 12-month court-monitored program.

“I am very proud of these graduates and what they have accomplished,” said County Attorney Irv Maze. “Drug Court is much tougher than jail time. It requires commitment and courage. These graduates have shown they have both, and as a result, they have a new life ahead of them.”

The Jefferson County Attorney’s Drug Court Program is one of the oldest and most successful in the country. Created in 1993, the program has graduated more than 400, with a 13% recidivism rate. The Jefferson County Attorney’s Drug Court Program cost approximately $3,800 per individual to complete, versus $17,000 per year cost of incarceration.
