Diabetes is the leading cause of non traumatic injury amputations. In 2002 there were 1,180 lower limb amputations in Kentucky among people with diabetes. More than 75% of amputations among people with diabetes are preventable with proper care and yet fewer than 64% of people with diabetes in Kentucky have had a foot exam in the last year. Diabetes can also cause such other foot injuries as loss of feeling in the feet, distortions of the foot, and foot wounds that do not heal.
