Repairs will Address Problems with Filtration System and Aging Pipes with main pool
LOUISVILLE – The Olympic pool at Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center will remain closed for repairs through March 24. Metro Parks is repairing a significant leak and moving forward with a major pool improvement project originally scheduled to take place this spring.
The facility’s therapy pool and fitness center remain open for normal hours.
The Olympic pool has been closed since Sunday afternoon, when chemical levels in the pool became unstable. Workers were refilling the pool on Monday when a leak occurred in the pool’s main drain pipe system.
The main drain system is being replaced at the same time Metro Parks is expediting the improvements planned for this spring. That work includes replacing aging pipes and installing a UV filtration system that will greatly reduce the need to apply chemicals to the water.
“While such a major leak in the main drain was a surprise, the timing is fortunate since there was already planned work under contract,” said Jerry Brown, assistant director of Metro Parks. “We’re in a position to make the best out of a bad situation. When the work is complete, we’ll have an entirely new recirculation system and the recent issues with chemical levels in the pool will be resolved. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make these repairs and improvements.”
