Forest hosting Family Fun Days starting June 4
Thursday May 26, 2011
To highlight improvements to the Tom Wallace Recreation Area and encourage Louisville residents to be active outdoors and get close to nature, Jefferson Memorial Forest is offering four Forest Family Fun Days, open to the public, during the spring and summer.
“The Forest has a lot to offer those who seek the simple pleasures of life with the backdrop of the great outdoors,” said Bennett Knox, Natural Areas Manager for Metro Parks. “We’re hoping folks will mark these four days on their calendar and come out to the Forest and join us.”
The first Family Fun Day will take place June 4 when Metro Parks and Jefferson Memorial Forest host a Fishing Derby at Tom Wallace Lake. The Derby, which is free and open to children 17 and under, will last from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Poles, hooks and bait will be provided along with fishing instructors, contests and a free picture with any fish caught.
Forest staff and volunteers have been working hard this past year to put the shine back on Tom Wallace Recreation Area through modest improvements including: construction of a formal lake trail; ongoing efforts to remove invasive plants and restore the ecological condition of this well-loved area; replacing the aging fishing pier with a new structure; as well as partnering with KY Fish and Wildlife to provide improved fishing opportunities at the lake.
The Forest Family Fun Days are:
- Saturday, June 4th - Fishing Derby at Tom Wallace Recreation Area
- Saturday June 25th - Great American Campout at the Horine Reservation
- Saturday, July, 9th – Canoeing at Tom Wallace Lake
- Saturday, July 23rd – Ice Cream Social – Tom Wallace Recreation Area
“Come out and enjoy a day with your kids and grandkids, nieces and nephews, and friends and neighbors,” Metro Parks Director Mike Heitz said. “You and yours are sure to have a good time!”
