Five Louisville animal sheltering and rescue agencies are joining North Shore Animal League of America's Tour For Life®, the world's largest cooperative national adoption initiative, for an adoption event Friday, April 12, 2-7 p.m. at the Walmart Supercenter in Middletown.
Local shelter host the Kentucky Humane Society, along with Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS), Derby City Dog Rescue, Saving Sunny and Tyson's Chance will have adoptable pets and information at the event.
Northshore Animal Rescue League will bring their “shelter on wheels” adoption vehicle, and LMAS will have their SPOT vehicle, both loaded with dozens of cats, dogs, puppies and kittens. Animals from all five agencies will be available for adoption, and the public is invited to learn more about these agencies that, collectively, are working to end pet homelessness by ensuring that every adoptable pet in the Louisville area finds a permanent, loving home. In addition, there will be raffles and giveaways.
Northshore Animal Rescue League is the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. In partnership with PURINA ONE, their 2013 Tour for Life will stop in 53 cities in 27 states as they join their partners in rescue nationwide to promote the lifesaving choice to adopt Mutt-i-grees® (any pet rescued from a shelter). Last year's Tour for Life helped find homes for over 1,500 animals across the country.

Derby City Dog Rescue (DCDR) is non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) all-breed rescue based in Louisville. Our initial aim was to bridge the gap between local animal shelters in Louisville and other rescues outside the state to pursue placement of local dogs in urgent situations in our area. To ease some of the difficulties that can arise when dealing with government shelters, we provide quality photos of the animals, quality communication between rescues and shelters, temporary foster (in some cases), pulling assistance and help with getting dogs to their transports. DCDR also serves as a small rescue within the community, pulling dogs from our local shelters and placing them into foster homes and handling adoptions. http://www.derbycitydogrescue.org/
Saving Sunny, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Louisville, rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes animal victims of abuse, neglect and those that are in danger of euthanasia. Most of our dogs are described as “Bully Breeds,” including American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Bulldogs, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, and other misunderstood breeds or breed mixes. Our primary mission is to provide safe haven in foster homes that will help our dogs become healthy, socialized and balanced in order to be able to adopt them into positive and loving homes. http://www.savingsunnyinc.org/
The mission of Tyson’s Chance is to rescue, rehabilitate and provide exceptional care for companion animals in need prior to finding them safe and loving homes. We offer a free spay and neuter program (Prevent A Bull) for bully breeds in Shelby County, Ky. We also help educate the public by providing access to services that will encourage responsible pet ownership. Tyson’s Chance specializes in the rescue of special needs animals. We are known for taking in dogs with severe issues, be it medical, behavioral or just the ones that nobody else wants. About 50 percent of our animals are considered "special needs" but we also adopt out puppies, kittens, and adults with NO issues at all. http://www.tysonschance.com/
