Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13) will be making a very important trip in October. The Councilwoman will join others from across the nation to learn more about the Community Transformation Grant Program.

“Metro Louisville has been chosen out of 900 applicants to receive up to $3.6 million under this new federal program,” says Welch. “I am honored to have the chance to continue making Louisville a healthy place to live. It is one of my top priorities.”

Welch will attend a kick off meeting in Atlanta to learn more about the program on October 22nd through October 24th.

The Community Transformation Grants (CTG) program will support community-level efforts to reduce chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. By promoting healthy lifestyles, especially among population groups experiencing the greatest burden of chronic disease, these grants will help improve health, reduce health disparities, and control health care spending.

The Councilwoman is a registered nurse by profession. With her background in health care, she has already helped Metro Louisville administer the $7.9 million Louisville Putting Prevention to Work Program announced as part of the 2009 stimulus program. She was a member of that grant’s advisory committee planning programs and initiatives to improve the collective health of the city.

“We have been leading the country with initiatives that can be copied by any city or community,” says Welch. “It is important that we keep this momentum going because the efforts we make today will not only save us healthcare costs in the long run but will save lives.”

The Community Transformation Grant Program is administered through the Center for Disease Control.
