For Immediate Release:
Louisville Metro Council
Things have been picking up in Metro Louisville’s District 1 area. This development is due in large part to some 40 young people who have spent this summer being part of the “Green Clean Team.” Their goal has been to clean up many areas of District 1.
“I have been amazed at the response these young people have received from the public with the work they have done cleaning up parks, alleys and streets,” says Councilwoman Judith Green (D-1). “These kids are showing the community they do care about their community.”
The “Green Clean Team” was formed through a partnership between the Youth Alive program, Metro Louisville and Green. The young people on the team range in age from 13 to 17 and work Monday through Thursday from 11:00am to 2:00pm.
So far, the “Green Clean Team” has targeted streets like Cecil, Greenwood, Broadway, 40th-45th and Hale Streets north to Broadway, 45th and Garland east to 34th Streets, Flaget and Chickasaw parks. The “Green Clean Team” spent the week of July 28th through July 31st in District 1 South, particularly on Cane Run Road.
The “Green Clean Team” usually meets at the Flaget Community Center, at 11:00 a.m. On the days the “Green Clean Team” worked in District 1 South, they met at the Lake Dreamland Fire Department. Transportation to the Southern part of District 1 is provided by Youth Alive, Inc.
“Residents, neighboring churches, and business owners have shown their appreciation for these efforts by giving the “Green Clean Team”, cool water, food, and other refreshments as a way of showing appreciation,” says Project manager, Shuronda Trabue. “People on the street and at bus stops have walked up to these young people and thanked them for their work and service to the community”
Green has planned an end of summer back to school bash, on August 8th as a way of honoring the “Green Clean Team” for going above and beyond the call of duty. As a result of the program’s success, there is a waiting list of young people who would like to be on future “Green Clean Teams”.
