Louisville Metro Council President Kelly Downard today announced the formation of a committee to focus on youth and health initiatives.
“These are issues that have community-wide impact,” Downard said. “We must find a community-wide solution. For a better future for all of Louisville, we have to work together to address these problems. The committee will analyze existing programs and identify unmet needs.”
Members of the Committee for a Safe and Healthy Community are: Chairman George Unseld, D-6; Barbara Shanklin, D-2; Ken Fleming, R-7; George Melton, D-15; and Glen Stuckel, R-17. Members from the administration will serve in an advisory role.
"This committee gives us an opportunity to communicate directly with organizations and help them meet their goals and implement their programs,” Unseld said. "The health and safety of our citizens, particularly our young people, continue to be one of our top priorities.”
During the budget process in June, the Metro Council heard testimony from various agencies and citizens about several problems in the community, many of them centered around youth and health issues. The Council added $368,000 to create a youth, education, crime and health initiative.
Items that were discussed and may be part of the initiative include: afterschool and summer programs for youth to help decrease the crime and violence in our community; additional funding for primary health care for low-income families so preventive care will improve their health as well as save the community from costly emergency room charges, when health care is delayed so long that the problems become more serious; increased funding for substance abuse rehabilitation; and funding for a forensic doctor for child abuse victims, which would ensure that victims are treated appropriately and that prosecutors are better prepared in court cases.
