A family tradition returns to Shawnee Park in the month of August when the 2011 Friday Night Outdoor Family Film Festival kicks off with a free showing of movies for residents of District 5. The fun begins with “The Karate Kid.”

“This year’s festival will have another great series of movies that will be a chance for the family to get together and have a little fun at Shawnee Park,” says Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D-5). “In years past, we have had a great response to the festival and we are happy to bring it back once again.”

The premiere movie 2010’s “The Karate Kid” stars Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. It tells the story of a 12 year old boy who moves to China and runs into a neighborhood bully. He meets an aging maintenance man who is kung fu master and learns about life.

On Friday nights in August, the films will be shown in Shawnee Park at the ball fields beginning at dusk. The ball fields are located at Southwestern Parkway and West Market Street. The films are free and bring a picnic basket, lawn chair or blanket.

“There are many great things happening at Shawnee Park,” says Hamilton. “We have a new splash park and a community that is beginning to realize what a great place the park is for family fun. This event is just one more opportunity to come out and see Shawnee Park if you have not been here in sometime.”

The lineup for the 2011 Outdoor Family Film Festival is as follows:

August 5 – “The Karate Kid”

August 12 – “Waiting for Superman” – with special short feature “Bring You’re A-Game”

August 19 – “Mooz-Lum”

August 26 – “A Raisin in the Sun
