Councilman Hal Heiner, R-19, announced the Metro Council’s budget hearing schedule for June.
Heiner, who became chairman of the Appropriations and Revenue Committee in January, said the goal of this year’s hearings is to make the process more open and accessible.
“All information-gathering and decision-making on what groups and projects are funded will be conducted in public,” Heiner said. “A more open process will increase accountability and give taxpayers more confidence that we are investing their money wisely.”
Budget hearings will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday. There will be almost 60 hours of hearings and deliberations this year. The public will have two opportunities to address the council – 6 p.m. June 9 and 10 a.m. June 10. Speakers will have a limit of three minutes. Sign-up will begin one hour prior to each hearing; no sign-ups will be allowed before this time.
All budget hearings will be held in the council chambers in the third floor of city hall and will be televised on cable channel 25. Other committee meetings in June will be moved to the third floor conference room.
The Council must pass a budget by June 30. Its last regularly scheduled June meeting is June 24.
