In an effort to show young people ways to deal with life in a positive way without turning to crime or violence, Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton and the Shawnee Weed & Seed Committee present the 3rd Annual Juvenile Crime Prevention Youth Summit.
“This Summit is a chance for young people to hear from other in our community who have dealt with the problems of growing up and want to share their experiences,” says Hamilton. “The best way we as adults can help our young people is to communicate with them and lead by example.”
The Youth Summit will be held at the Northwest Neighborhood Place housed in The Academy at Shawnee High School located at 4018 W. Market Street on Saturday, May 8, 2010 from 9:30 until 3:00 PM.
Workshops will be offered to students on such topics as gang prevention, drug/alcohol avoidance, healthy relationships, hip hop images in the media and much more. There will be a variety of presenters for youth and parents including authors Dr. Veda McClain, Devon Holt and others.
“The organizers of the Youth Summit have done a very good job of bringing together experts in the field that know how to talk with young people and at the same time listen to what they are dealing with in our society,” says Hamilton. “This is a very important area to the Shawnee Weed and Seed Committee because young people are our future citizens and homeowners.”
This is a free event for middle and high school students. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to participants. Door prizes will be available. No Pre-registration is required.
