For Immediate release:
Some 100 kids from the Newburg and Norfolk areas will be the guests of Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin (D) 2 for a Saturday performance of Disney’s “The Lion King”.
“I think is important that we expose children to the arts and what better way than to give them a little taste of Broadway right here in our own back yard,” says Shanklin.
The children were selected from various churches and youth organizations in the Newburg and Norfolk areas. The children range in age from toddlers to teenager.
Disney’s “The Lion King” was first an animated featured film released in 1994. It was then adapted to the stage on Broadway in 1997. It tells the story of Simba, a lion cub, who eventually overcomes many obstacles to become a king.
“I think it is a great story that talks not only about responsibility but that we all have a place in the world and people depend on us,” says Shanklin.
The PNC Broadway Series will begin a five week run of Disney’s presents the Lion King. The student will see the hit show this Saturday, June 9th.
The Councilwoman says there is another reason for the trip.
“It’s the beginning of summer and we should offer children options. Maybe we can get them active in the arts and interested in pursuing a career in song or dance.” says Shanklin. “It’s worth a try.”
