District 3 Councilwoman Mary Woolridge will sponsor the Unity in the Community Festival, to foster community spirit and motivate young people before the start of the new school year. The festival will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14 at Algonquin Park, Cypress Street and Burwell Avenue.
The festival will feature youth program information, health screenings, and fire truck demonstrations. A Youth Rally will kick off at 2:30 p.m. with motivational speaker DeVone Holt, author of Hip-Hop Slop: The Impact of a Dysfunctional Culture plus steppers and rapper Andre Green.
"I believe it is important to provide positive motivation and activities for our young people, especially in light of the violence in our city," said Councilwoman Woolridge. "They need opportunities to find ways to express themselves positively."
In addition, youths representing various agencies will act as ambassadors during the event, greeting and assisting attendees and keeping the park clean. Agencies will also recognize outstanding youth members for their service or achievements.
Food will be offered free to the first 400 people, sponsored by Councilwoman Woolridge.
As part of the festival, screenings will be available for blood pressure, diabetes and lead poisoning, and attendees can visit informational booths on tobacco cessation; immunizations; HIV prevention; sickle cell anemia; dental care and Elder Serve activities. Louisville Water Company will provide free bottled tap water.
The festival will be followed by Music in the Metro featuring Radio Disney, the Metro Parks Festivan and the band Chequee, which begins playing at 5 p.m.
