Councilwoman Mary C. Woolridge (D-3) will join hundreds of volunteers on Thursday, October 9th as part of the 2008 Middle School Connection of the Jefferson County public Schools.
“I have participated in this program for the past three years. I have found it rewarding and I believe it is an excellent way for an adult to help a child,” says Woolridge.
The Councilwoman will attend Johnson Middle School to talk with seventh grade students. Last year, some 1,700 volunteers partnered with schools in Jefferson County as part of the program.
The goal of the Middle School Connection is to interact with students stressing the importance of coming to school; doing well in school; high school choices and career interest. The volunteers will also stress how reading, writing and math skills are used in all aspects of everyday life.
“Children look to adults as role models in how they will deal with their future,” says Woolridge. “If we take the time to talk with them about our own everyday experiences then we may leave a positive influence and therefore help them make good choices about the need for education.”
Woolridge will meet with students between 12:00pm and 1:00pm on Thursday. Johnson Middle School is located at 2509 Wilson Avenue.
