The Leadership of the Louisville Metro Council have released the following statements with regard to the management of MSD by State Auditor Crit Luallen:

“This audit is disappointing and the Auditor’s findings show it is time for change in MSD’s board oversight and business practices. While the State Auditor found no fault in the day to day operations of MSD, the agency’s business practices in these tight economic times must be improved to restore confidence to rate payers that their money is being spent wisely. All public agencies must be held accountable for how business is conducted. The Metro Council will offer its support and any assistance as the organization begins correcting the concerns which have been raised.”

Councilman Jim King, Metro Council President, District 10

“We have an opportunity with this report. The goal should be to elevate business practices to the level of efficiency found in day to day operations of MSD. While many see great improvements in drainage and sewage treatment near their homes and other areas, they should also feel that business operations are striving to be efficient and accountable as MSD moves forward with its available resources.”

Councilwoman Madonna Flood, Chair of the Majority Caucus, District 24

While MSD has accomplished much in improving its services of sewage treatment and drainage, this audit brings up to many troubling areas where oversight is lacking. These are tough times for families and businesses. All government agencies must be mindful of how they spend every dollar. Accountability and efficiency are key to keeping the public’s trust. It is my hope new leadership and direction can move MSD to the goals outlined in the Auditor’s reports.

Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin, Vice Chair Majority Caucus, District 2

"The State Auditor's report shines light on the deficiencies of MSD's ethics, transparency and accountability. I am hopeful that the Mayor's task force and Metro Council's increased participation will help find answers to the flawed past business practices and lack of board oversight that are outlined in the audit report."

Councilman Ken Fleming, Chair of Minority Caucus, District 7

"I am shocked at the revelations relating to the financial and legal affairs at MSD, which were apparently either poorly managed or not managed at all."

Councilman Kelly Downard, Vice- Chair Budget Committee, District 16
