Saying he wanted to help “take the sting” out of tough losses this weekend, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer today made friendly — and flavorful — bets with the mayors of Wichita and Berkeley.
In the men’s NCAA matchup, if Wichita State wins, Mayor Fischer will send to Mayor Carl Brewer a fully-stocked bourbon bar — compliments of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour. And if the Cardinals win, Mayor Fischer will be enjoying some nice Kansas steaks, and filets on the grill, compliments of Brewer.
In the women’s matchup, if the University of California wins, Mayor Fisher will send to Mayor Tom Bates a bourbon bar, too. If the Cards win, Mayor Bates will send a dozen bottles of local California red wines.
“I’m so confident of a Cardinal victory with both teams that I’m willing to bet fully-stocked bourbon bars on these critical games,” Fischer said. “And I can’t wait to eat that good steak from Kansas, along with some fine wine from California.”
“Not so fast,” Brewer retorted. “I’m so confident of a Shockers win that I’m betting $500 worth of steaks and top-quality beef from famed Cargill Meats here in Wichita.”
The three mayors made the friendly wagers today over the telephone.
Fischer’s basket includes some of the state’s best-known brands -- Woodford Reserve, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, Bulleit Bourbon, Four Roses, Evan Williams and Town Branch Bourbon. All are members of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA), which owns and operates the Kentucky Bourbon Trail adventure. The basket also includes T-shirts, hats, bourbon candles and glasses and a silver flask.
“Louisville’s incredible run in the tournament is proof that the Cardinals have raised the bar, literally,” said KDA President Eric Gregory. “We’re banking that the Bourbon bar stays in its rightful place when the Cards bring the big trophy home.”
