Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D) 5 has announced a community wide protest rally for Sunday, June 22nd at 2:00pm at the corner of 34th and Market Streets.
“I want the community to be aware that a liquor store has applied for a license across the street from an area voters said “no” to more alcohol sales in this area last September,” says Hamilton.
In September, voters overwhelmingly approved no alcohol sales in precincts N104, N105, N107 and N109. Although challenged in court, the precincts eventually went dry earlier this year.
“Bakos Liquors is trying to thwart the will of the people moving from precinct N105 across the street into N106 to escape the areas where alcohol is not sold,” says Hamilton. “This community continues to send the message that enough is enough when it comes to blanket approval of liquor stores licenses.”
A similar rally in March of 2007 is what began the effort of the special wet dry election.
