Muhammad Ali Will Welcome Ryder Cup Fans

11-Day Celebration of Golf Championship Starts Today

Muhammad Ali, Louisville’s most famous native son, will welcome guests from around the world to the 37th Ryder Cup and a festival of events surrounding the international golf championship.

The Muhammad Ali Welcome Celebration at the Muhammad Ali Center Plaza at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, is free and open to the public, said Greg Roberts, President/CEO, Muhammad Ali Center. The hour-long event, sponsored by Yum! Brands, Inc. and Ernst & Young, will be hosted by Ali and his wife, Lonnie, and will feature live music.

“As an international education and cultural center, we are delighted to have an opportunity to welcome international visitors to Muhammad Ali's hometown,” Roberts said. “Having the Ali Center as a backdrop for this event furthers our goal of creating a global gathering place for people to share, interact and celebrate with people from around the world.”

Mayor Jerry Abramson said the welcome from “The Greatest” is a world-class addition to the 11-day celebration of Ryder Cup known as The Cup Experience.

“We’re excited to showcase all that we have to offer as the world turns its attention to Louisville, Kentucky, and the 37th Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Course,” Abramson said.

Some of the main events during The Cup Experience include the Humana Fightmaster Cup at the Cardinal Club, The Cup Village and Team USA Pep Rally at 4th Street Live! and Soiree Under the Spires at Churchill Downs. For more information on these and other events, visit www.TheCupExperience.com.
