Louisville Metro Councilmembers plan to travel to Frankfort, Kentucky on February 28, 2006 to push for state funding for a downtown arena. Councilmembers plan to depart from City Hall at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and will speak with members of the General Assembly to explain the council’s strong support for funding for a downtown arena.

Metro Council President Kevin Kramer stated, “We want to make sure officials throughout the state know that Louisville’s Metro Council overwhelmingly supports bringing an arena to our downtown.”

Fourth District Councilman, David Tandy, Vice Chairman of the Democratic Caucus and Metro Council representative for the area where the downtown arena will be located stated, “A multi-purpose arena located in Downtown Louisville is not just a project that will benefit Jefferson County, but it is a project that will help all of Kentucky.”  Councilman Tandy went on to say, “The tax revenue generated in and around the downtown arena will be utilized in communities all across the Commonwealth, including Jefferson County, to help make our state the very best that it can be.”
Twenty-second District Councilman Robin Engel, Chair of the Republican Caucus stated, “A downtown arena is vital to the continued growth of our community. The support for this project crosses geographic, economic and political lines and we want our representatives in Frankfort to see how united we are for this cause.”
The trip to Frankfort will include visits by councilmembers to the 10:00am meetings of both the House Local Government (Room 131, Capital Annex) and House Appropriations and Revenue Committees (Room 129, Capital Annex).

Many Metro Councilmembers plan to stay in Frankfort for the remainder of the day to have informal meetings with elected officials throughout the state, and some plan to attend the afternoon sessions of both the House and Senate. In addition to visiting members of the General Assembly, members of the Louisville Metro Council will be passing out copies of a letter of support for a downtown arena to members of the General Assembly.
