Walking through the Jefferson Memorial Forest anytime is a treat for anyone no matter what the season of the year. However, don’t be surprised if you should happen to hear a little bluegrass music coming through the Forest on a special Saturday in May.
“The Forest Fest is a great way to showcase the beauty and fun of the Jefferson Memorial Forest,” says Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch (D) 13. “It is a great collection of local and regional bluegrass musicians who love to play for people who love to listen to a unique blend of American music.”
The Fourth Annual Forest Fest kicks off on Saturday, May 17th beginning at 10:30am until 6:00pm. It features five musical groups throughout the day and best of all it is free admission.
Headlining the 2008 Forest Fest will be country legend Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. Stanley, whose banjo has performed on more than 170 albums, has been in the bluegrass music business for more than 55 years. Other groups performing are Kentucky Sassafras, Stone Hollow, Dozens of Dollars and Bluegrass 101.
“We will also have various arts and crafts booths on hand for those who would like to spend a nice Saturday afternoon with family and friends,” says Welch
The 2008 Forest Fest is sponsored by Metro Parks, the Fairdale PicPac Neighborhood Market and the Fairdale- McDaniel Funeral Home. Welch is a co-sponsor of the event along with Council members Judith Green (D) 1, David Tandy (D) 4, Rick Blackwell (D) 12, Bob Henderson (D) 14, Robin Engel (R) 22, James Peden (R) 23 and Madonna Flood (D) 24.
