City Launches Social Media Channel for Families

Parents can find community highlights in one Facebook and Twitter feed

Louisville Metro Government has launched a new social media channel, making it easier for families to learn about the city events and services they depend on and enjoy.

Two related social media feeds – @LouFamilies on Twitter and the “Louisville Metro Families” page on Facebook – will together create an information stream about concerts, lectures, movies, and events at Louisville facilities.

For example, in one recent week, the feed posted information about a free concert by Appalatin at Iroquois Amphitheater, free outdoor family movies at several area parks, a lecture on birds and gardens at the Farnsley-Moremen house, and free canoe lessons at Tom Wallace Lake.

“We have a lot of great programs and opportunities happening all over the city,” Mayor Greg Fischer said. “We are constantly looking for ways to make sure that citizens are getting information about these events in ways that are convenient for them.”

Last spring, a University of Illinois – Chicago study ranked Louisville Metro Government 8th in the nation for its use of social media to communicate with citizens, just behind Seattle, San Francisco and other tech powerhouses.

Communications Director Chris Poynter said the idea is to send out information in streams that reflect who is most interested in receiving the information – rather than dividing the information by what city department is generating it.

Individual metro departments – the Zoo, Metro Parks, Louisville Free Public Library and the Mayor’s Office – will continue their existing accounts. Frequent patrons or fans of the Zoo, for example, will still want to follow the Zoo on Facebook and/or Twitter. But the family channel will give parents a more general survey of the breadth of family activities across departments.
