It is a campaign with a simple goal: to let the men and women who serve in the United States Military know that they are not forgotten. For the last five years, Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D-24) has chosen Valentine’s Day to kick off “Doing Our Part from the Heart.”
“We are fortunate this year that military operations in Iraq are over but we still have men and women who are handling the war in Afghanistan and others who are in remote areas serving our country,” said Flood. “I call upon our community again to let these brave men and women know we are still behind them.”
Flood officially kicked off the 2012 “Doing Our Part from the Heart” Campaign on Tuesday from the Okolona Fire Station Number 1. The effort asks for donations from the community of simple items such as hand sanitizer, eye drops, bug repellent, candy and more for troops serving in remote locations around the world.
“We have received many letters and emails thanking us for the generosity of this community,” says Flood. “Many times, those serving in a remote area do not have access to a PX or store where they can purchase items that make their tour of duty a little easier.”
The Councilwoman created Doing Our Part after receiving a letter from her son who was serving in Iraq. The letter told her of how he and many soldiers did not have basic personal items like sunscreen or bug repellent while on duty. It asked that she send some items to help out instead of a regular Christmas present.
“I thought it was time to see what could be done and I have been very lucky to have the willingness of a community and many sponsors to help out,” said Flood.
Joining the Councilwoman again for this year’s campaign is the Okolona Business Association, the Okolona Fire Department, Republic Bank, Scheller’s Fitness and Cycling and Jackson- Hewitt Tax Service and the Sternburg Automotive Group. The campaign began Tuesday, February 14th and runs through March 30th.
Republic Bank continues its partnership by setting up an account to accept all monetary donations to cover postage for the items going overseas. For those who do not wish to donate specific items, donations of money can also be deposited at any Republic Bank. Make sure to note on the check “From the Heart” account.
“Each year, we have managed to meet our goals during tough economic times,” said Flood. “Our service men and women have made great sacrifices to answer the call of our country. I am always amazed at how our community responds when we ask for help.”
