4th Street Sidewalks Open to Pedestrians 4th Street Live! Starting to Come Alive
Monday May 24, 2004
Mayor Jerry Abramson announced today that Fourth Street is open for pedestrian traffic between Liberty and Muhammad Ali through the 4th Street Live! project.
“4th Street Live! is about to live up to its name, allowing pedestrian traffic through the project,” Abramson said. “Giving pedestrians access to 4th Street again and with new storefronts continuing to open, this project is making its metamorphosis into downtown’s largest entertainment venue.”
The sidewalks will be open as construction continues along Fourth Street on various storefronts. The fencing has been removed from around the sidewalks, and barriers were put up along Liberty Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard to prevent vehicle traffic.
Some parts of the sidewalk will continue to be blocked off, changing every day, with all fencing scheduled to be removed by Friday. Vehicle traffic is expected to resume on Fourth Street in late June for the first time in nearly 25 years.
Upcoming openings include TGI Friday’s, which will open Wednesday, and Hard Rock Café, which will open Memorial Day. Red Star Tavern and T-Mobile opened Saturday.
