Louisville Water Employees Participate in Louisville Metro Day of Service

Thursday January 6, 2011

Over 30 Louisville Water employees and their families will participate in Louisville Metro’s Day of Service on January 8.  Employees will collect and sort shoes, clothing, blankets and nonperishable food items at 10 drop-off locations.

The event benefits Jefferson County Community Ministries and EDGE Outreach, a Louisville-based organization that helps provide sustainable solutions for clean water throughout the world.  Louisville Water has partnered with EDGE since 2010 to provide funds and technical resources for water projects.

The shoes collected on January 8 help support EDGE Outreach’s work.  How do shoes equate to clean water? Through a collaboration with Shoeman Water Project, the shoes are sold at minimal cost to contracted shoe exporters and sent to some of the developing countries where EDGE provides clean water. Shoeman Water Project ships one truckload of shoes, averaging 20,000 lbs, out of Louisville per month. Each truckload of shoes allows EDGE to supply clean water to approximately 10,000 individuals.

Since the summer of 2010, Louisville Water has collected over 900 pairs of shoes for EDGE Outreach.  Employees and customers can donate gently used and new shoes at the company’s John L. Huber Corporate Office at 550 South Third Street.
