Smile Kentucky! Provides Free Dental Screenings for Kids

Monday October 5, 2009

During October and November over 18,000 children will learn about the importance of dental health with Louisville Water Company’s dental partnership, Smile Kentucky! Now in its 8th year, the program provides education along with free dental screenings and treatment to children at elementary schools. This year, Smile Kentucky! is at 34 schools in Jefferson, Bullitt, Nelson, Shelby, Marion and Washington Counties.Smile Kentucky! Logo

Students participate in education programs where they learn how to measure sugar in snacks and the value of fluoride in tap water. Children in grades 3-6 also receive a free dental screening. The program culminates in February when up to 400 children without private dental insurance or government assistance receive free, comprehensive treatment.

Louisville Water Company created Smile Kentucky! in 2002 along with the U of L School of Dentistry, Louisville Dental Society and Colgate. The company coordinates the education and public relations aspects of the program too.

This year, many children will also receive follow-up care, thanks to the Prospect-Goshen Rotary Club. The club held its annual golf scramble on October 5 with proceeds going to Smile Kentucky!
