Louisville – Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin (D-2) is encouraging residents of Newburg and Norfolk to take advantage of new playground equipment in Petersburg Park she secured as part of the improvements for Metro Parks.
“Two years ago, I and the Newburg Community pushed for new playground equipment for Petersburg Park,” says Shanklin. “Working with the Metro Council and the Dream Foundation, we were able to ensure this new playground is assessable to all children in the area.”
The new equipment is part of the Petersburg Park Master plan. A total of $72, 254 was set aside for improvements to the park. The Dream Foundation added an additional $40,000 to make the playground assessable to children who have special needs. It includes a sliding board, swings and jungle gym. The total cost of the project is $112, 254.
The new playground is not the only improvement being made to the park.
At the same time, Shanklin announces that new construction of six tennis courts at the park is also underway. The project is being funded by $44,129 of Capital Infrastructure Funds from Shanklin’s office and the remainder was through Community Development Block Grant Funds. The total cost is $295,890.
“I am pleased that we are moving forward to make Petersburg Park a state of the art place for exercising, relaxing and fun for our community,” says Shanklin. “I specifically want to thank Metro Parks for working with me and others in the Newburg community to listen to the needs of the people here when it comes to Petersburg Park.”
The park is located on Indiana Trail in Newburg.
