$40,000 on the Line for the Winning City

In celebration of the 400th anniversary of its original license to distill, Bushmills – home of BUSHMILLS® Irish Whiskey – continues its nationwide search to find the “Twin City of Bushmills in America.” Today, the town announces Louisville, Ky. as one of the three finalist cities. Louisville could win a $40,000 grant along with the Twin City title.
Bushmills, a small town with big spirit, is looking for the one American city that best embodies its four key personality traits: pride of place, craftsmanship, hospitality, and humor and wit.
Louisville’s longtime mayor, Jerry Abramson, says his hometown is a perfect fit.
“Louisville has an unbeatable mix of pride, originality and, sometimes quirky, humor,” Abramson said. “It shows in the pride our citizens have for their neighborhoods, in the unique festivals and events we host, the world-famous products we make and in the eclectic mix of locally-owned restaurants you'll find here.”
Louisville’s application for the Twin Cities title outlined how the city mirrors the four personality traits of Bushmills:
Pride of Place: People in Louisville celebrate their history and heritage with festivals like Octoberfest, Irish Fest, Greek Fest, Italian Fest and WorldFest, and by giving their neighborhoods names like Germantown, Irish Hill, Paristown and Limerick.
Craftsmanship: Louisville is a city of fine craftsmanship, producing Kentucky bourbon and Louisville Slugger baseball bats, a favorite among professional baseball players.
Hospitality/Humor and Wit: Louisville’s famous Kentucky Derby is the setting where the city’s warm hospitality and humor combine, as thousands come to the city every year for “the greatest two minutes in sports.”
While Louisville has major similarities to the town of Bushmills, it also has stiff competition in the two other finalist cities—Boston, Mass. and Portland, Maine—which have their own unique flair. Boston has been called the “greatest Irish city in the world,” and Portland residents have such pride of place that, though their city has burned to the ground three times, it has been rebuilt just as many.
People of legal purchase age are invited to vote at www.Bushmills400years.com for the city they would like to see crowned the “Twin City of Bushmills in America”. Voting will run through March 17, 2008—St. Patrick’s Day. Voters can enter for a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Ireland to experience “Irish at its best,” including a private visit to the Bushmills Distillery.
If Louisville receives more votes than its competitors, it will be proclaimed the “Twin City of Bushmills in America” and will take home a $40,000 grant from Bushmills—$20,000 for the preservation and advancement of the city’s time-honored traditions and culture, and $20,000 for programs that promote responsible drinking.
“In whiskey making and in personality, the parallels between the town of Bushmills and the city of Louisville are undeniable,” says Gordon Donoghue, Master Distiller of Bushmills Irish Whiskey. “However,” Donoghue warns, “Boston and Portland show great Bushmills spirit also, so if Louisville residents want their city to win, we need all eligible people to vote daily.”
Members from Louisville's Irish Fest and WorldFest planning committees submitted the application for Bushmills Twin City Search. If Louisville wins, plans are to usethe $20,000 for those festivals.
