This weekend, the Newburg area will take time to have an old fashion community celebration with a focus on safety.
“Newburg Days is a tradition for many families, young and old,” says Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin (D) 2. “It’s a time to get together, have fun and enjoy ourselves while catching up with friends and neighbors.”
Newburg Days will get underway beginning Friday night September 1st, at Petersburg Park. A wide variety of entertainment events are planned through Sunday September 3rd.
Many events are free and open to the public including present and former residents of the Newburg community. Vendors will also be available with food and merchandise at Petersburg Park. Amusement rides will also be provided.
But there will also be a special effort made by area ministers to reach out to young people in Newburg.
“We will have several ministers wearing a special t-shirt,” says Shanklin. “They will walk through the crowd and make themselves available to young people in an effort to curb violence in our community.”
The t-shirts say “Ministers on a Mission”.
The idea was announced by Shanklin last week as part of a new resource network recently formed with ministers and civil activists in the Newburg and Norfolk area. The ministers will be high profile during Newburg Days.
Meanwhile, Dr. J. Blaine Hudson, Dean of Arts of Sciences at the University of Louisville will be featured the keynote speaker at the Community Breakfast at Newburg Middle School on Saturday morning. Elected officials of Metro Louisville and candidates running for office will serve breakfast.
“We want everyone to have a safe weekend,” says Shanklin. “Enjoy Newburg Days for the fellowship and fun it has become as part of the traditional end of summer.”
