Councilwoman Scott announces Parkland Community Garden Build Day 2

Wednesday July 24, 2013

Louisville – Three months after the successful kick off of the Parkland Community Garden, Councilwoman Attica Scott (D-1) invites everyone in the Parkland Neighborhood to come out on Saturday, July 27th and see the progress of the Garden and help with its expansion.

“This will be a great day to highlight how well the Community Garden is doing with the growing season in full swing,” says Scott. “We plan to expand the Garden and at the same time celebrate something positive in our community.”

Parkland Community Garden Build Day 2 begins at 10:00am at the corner of 28th and Dumesnil. The event will address healthy living, food security, urban agriculture, creating safe neighborhoods and building community through volunteer service.

“We created the Community Garden three months ago as part of the Mayor’s Day of Service,” says Scott. “We will expand the Garden with six new handicapped raised bed this Saturday and do some necessary weeding.. It is also an opportunity to evaluate this model for replication in the southwest part of District 1.”

Volunteers from numerous groups including: Parkland Neighborhood Improvement Association, University of Louisville Center for Environmental Policy and Management and FoodWorks interns from Middlebury College in Vermont will be working in the Gardens on Saturday.

As part of the event, several food trucks will be on hand and the Root Cellar will be there with its Root Mobile. A DJ will be playing music and the Louisville Free Public Library will bring its bookmobile.

“The Community Garden is one component of how we are redefining the Parkland Community,” says Scott. “Very soon, we will have the Family Scholar House opening on Catalpa Street, the Parkland Corridor Study is underway and we will host a Vision Louisville Town Meeting. Things are looking good for the area.”
