Now that Mayor Jerry Abramson has presented his budget for FY 2009, the Metro Council's Budget Committee will begin its review the plan and give approval by the end of June.
The review process will start on June 4th with the very first of several budget hearings..
"This may be the first time in the history of this merged government we have faced such challenging economic times," says Budget Chairwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D) 5. "We are very aware of the tight economic conditions while we still provide the basic services of government."
Hamilton announced this year’s budget hearing schedule for the month of June. It will begin with the first of two public hearings to allow any citizen to come forward and address the committee with concerns about the city's priorities for the coming year.
"I want to invite the public to speak at the beginning before the Council begins its deliberations," says Hamilton. "We are talking about taxpayer dollars and need to hear their concerns.”
The first public hearing will be conducted from 9:30am to 11:30am on June 4th. The second will be held the evening of Wednesday, June 18 beginning at 6:00pm. Both hearings will take place in the Council Chambers. Speakers will be limited to 3 minutes and should contact the Metro Council Clerk’s Office in order to sign up.
The Budget Committee will also get an overview of revenue estimates on June 4th. The Louisville Free Public Library and Metro Parks will appear on June 10th. Metro Police and all Public Protection Agencies will appear on June 11th.
The Metro Council is expected to vote on final budget on June 26th
