Louisville – There are still men and women serving in remote areas in Afghanistan and Iraq for the United States Military and in Metro, Louisville Valentine’s Day is a special day to let them know they are not forgotten.

For the last six years, Councilwoman Madonna Flood (D-24) has used this special day to kick off the “Doing Our Part from the Heart” Campaign by sending toiletries, snacks to our military. This year there is a special circumstance.

“We had a great response last year. Usually we have some items and funds left over to begin a new campaign but there was so much need we sent everything we had,” said Flood. “We are starting with no items and no money.”

Flood officially kicked off the 2013 “Doing Our Part from the Heart” Campaign on Thursday from the Okolona Fire Station Number 1. The goal of the campaign asks for donations from the community of simple items such as hand sanitizer, eye drops, bug repellent, candy and more for troops serving in remote locations around the world.

“We still have troops in Afghanistan stationed away from the conveniences that you and I have at hand right here at home,” says Flood. “Until everyone is home, we will go on letting those who are in the field know we love them and are thinking of them.”

Doing Our Part from the Heart began after the Councilwoman received a letter from her son serving in Iraq in 2006. Instead of what you might expect from some far from home, it was for basic personal items like deodorant, sunscreen and razors. He also asked for enough of those items for the other members of his unit.

Joining Flood for this year’s campaign is the Okolona Business Association, the Okolona Fire Department, Republic Bank, Scheller’s Fitness and Cycling and Jackson- Hewitt Tax Service. The campaign began Tuesday, February 14th and runs through the end of March.

Republic Bank continues its partnership by setting up an account to accept all monetary donations to cover postage for the items going overseas. Every package cost $15 to send. For those who do not wish to donate specific items, donations of money can also be deposited at any Republic Bank. Make sure to note on the check “From the Heart” account.

“Each year, we would not be successful if it were not the generosity and giving spirit of this community,” said Flood. “I want to thank the people who have helped us over these last several years. I appreciate them and so do the men and women who wear the uniforms of the United States of America.”
