By the time this summer is over, many students at Coral Ridge Elementary School in Louisville will not only have had some fun but improved their health if they take part in the VERB Summer Scorecard.

“This is a great program to encourage kids to get out, get active, and work toward improving their overall health and self-esteem,” says Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13). “It is something not only for kids but for the whole family to get involved in.”

On Tuesday, Welch and Coral Ridge’s Principal Beverly Goodwin were on hand as the Louisville Department of Public Health and Wellness launched VERB, a national campaign already underway in several Kentucky counties.

Over the next several weeks Louisville tweens (kids between the ages of 9 and 13) will participate in fun, physical activities. Each time they do, they can have their VERB Summer Scorecard stamped by participating businesses, agencies and faith-based organizations. Their parents can also initial up to 12 of the squares each time they do an hour of physical activity

There are a total of 24 squares of activities that must be stamped by July 30th. The grand finale will be August 1 at the Jefferson Memorial Forest in the Horine section where prizes will be given to the kids with the biggest scores. Fun physical activities, healthy food and prizes will be part of the festivities. Kids turning a completed VERB Summer Scorecard will each get a prize, and be entered in a drawing for major prizes as well.

Councilwoman Welch is partnering with the Department of Health and Wellness and Jefferson County Public Schools.

“As a registered nurse, I have been concerned about many health issues for the people of the district, especially young people,” says Welch. “The VERB Program is one way of showing them they can have fun and be healthy.”
