A recent shooting tragedy that took the life of a 12 year in the area has prompted Metro Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin (D-2) to offer free gun locks to residents of the Newburg area.
“If we can save the life of an innocent child and prevent tragedy then these gun locks are worth the effort,” says Shanklin.
The Councilwoman will be handing out free gun locks to residents of the area on Friday, April 16th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Anyone in the area who would like to receive a gun lock can go to 4809 Unseld Boulevard.
“We have 100 free gun locks that are available,” says Shanklin. “If we do not give them all away on Friday, then we will make them available through my office for anyone from the district that would like to call.”
Shanklin says she thought of the free give away because summer is coming up and there is a chance the area could see more tragedies if children are playing with a gun.
“With school out, many kids will have time on their hands and if they see a gun lying around it is just too tempting for some not to play with it,” she says. “Hopefully this will keep a child safe.”
