Eighth District Councilman Tom Owen announced that the Original Highlands Neighborhood Association will host its 2005 Garden Tour on Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12, from noon until 5 p.m. both days. The event features approximately 10 residential gardens within the Original Highlands Neighborhood, located just south of East Broadway between Barret and Baxter Avenues. Participating Original Highlands gardeners will be on hand to share their gardening vision, identify plantings and discuss their care.
A variety of gardening styles will be represented in this years Garden Tour, from minimalist patio gardens that incorporate water features to colorful and overflowing cottage gardens. Some of this year's gardeners participated in a very successful 2003 Garden Tour but returning visitors can count on finding gardens that have evolved with new stages of development and the changing tastes and needs of the gardener.
Tickets can be purchased both days between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Starbucks Coffee, located at the corner of Baxter and Highland Avenues (970 Baxter Avenue). Tickets are $10 and include a map for a leisurely, self-guided tour. Visitors are free to return to any garden as often as they like on the day of purchase in order to accommodate those who wish stop for lunch or shopping along either the Baxter or Barret Avenue corridors bordering the neighborhood. Proceeds from this year's garden tour will go toward neighborhood projects, including continued beautification and landscaping for Patterson Park on Morton Avenue.
