Louisville – With a new school year soon to begin, Councilwoman Attica Scott (D-1) announces a “Back to School” event set for this Saturday, August 18th at the Southwick Community Center.

“We want to make sure every child starts off to school on the right foot,” says Scott. “We will have school supplies, health checks and important school information for children and parents.”

The District 1 Back to School event will begin at 11:00am and end at1:00pm on Saturday, August 18th at the Southwick Community Center located at 3621 Southern Avenue.

The Back to School supplies are being donated and sponsored by West End Sports League. The supplies will be given out on a first come first serve basis and children must be accompanied by an adult in order to receive the supplies.

“If one is blessed with talent, resources or a position to help their neighbor,” says CheRhonda Greenlee, West Louisville Sports League organizer and District 1 Advisory Council member,” they should do it with a sense of urgency and humility.”

Norton’s Hospital will do health screenings, including blood sugar, blood pressure and body mass index. The Metro Department of Health and Wellness will perform lead poisoning tests.

A representative from the Jefferson County Public Schools will be on hand with calendar and school bus schedules and answer any questions about the coming school year.

Louisville Fire and Rescue will have a fire truck outside and firefighters will talk with students about fire safety. Voter registration will also be processed outside in the public right of way.

“I want to thank all of the people who are helping us with this Back to School event,” says Scott. “We support the education of our children and we know the best way for them to learn is with a stress free start.”
