When young people play any sport at the Shawnee Park Sports Complex, they will be reminded of a man who dedicated his life to helping young people and the people he served as a former Louisville Alderman and State Representative in the Kentucky House.
On Friday, the Shawnee Sports Complex was renamed in honor for the late Paul C. Bather.
“This is a fitting tribute to Paul who made the well being of all young people on one his top priorities as a public servant,” says Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D-5). “He was dedicated to the people of the West End.”
Bather first began political public service as Treasurer of Jefferson County, then as 12th Ward Alderman in the City of Louisville beginning in 1986 through 2000. He went on to serve the residents of the 43rd District of the Kentucky House of Representatives by first winning a special election in January of 2000 and then re-election in 2002.
He passed away on February 11, 2009 after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 61.
During his lifetime, Bather secured funds for many youth programs such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana. He was also instrumental in securing continued improvements to Shawnee Park.
The new Paul C. Bather Sports Complex is a state of the art outdoor athletic facility that contains football, baseball and basketball fields. It is also the central point of all recreational activities in the Park.
“Paul Bather left a wonderful legacy and hopefully future generations will be inspired and reminded of his work when they use this facility,” says Hamilton.
The Bather Sports Complex is located at Market Street and Southwestern Parkway
