Enjoy Louisville pure tap® on World Water Day

Wednesday March 21, 2012

The United Nations created World Water Day as an annual event in 1992 to focus attention on the importance of a safe, sustainable supply of drinking water.

Fill your glass with these water facts ---

  • You could call Louisville a “water capitol” since the city has an amazing natural resource, the Ohio River, where up to 75 billion gallons of water flows by Louisville every day. Compare that to developing countries where the lack of water creates food scarcity and causes more deaths than natural disasters.
  • Every person in the Louisville area has access to safe drinking water through Louisville Water, which provides an average of 120 million gallons of Louisville pure tap® daily to 850,000 people. It’s a stark contrast to the world – where 1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water. There are parts of the United States where water restrictions are a fact of life and the scarcity of fresh water has brought court battles over water-use rights.
  • Water = Food.  You could call your diet a “watery meal.” Consider this: 80% of a tomato is water; it takes 1,500 gallons of water to produce a burger, fries and drink; and a cow drinks four gallons of water to produce a gallon of milk. When it comes to water consumption, agriculture is often at the top of the list.
  • Be “green” with water - - Monitor your water usage and be a wise consumer. Plus, forget the bottle! Louisville’s drinking water, Louisville pure tap® is rated as one of the best in the nation. Fill your glass or reusable bottle with Louisville pure tap® -- it’s a good value that’s good for you. You can fill an 8-ounce glass 66 times for less than a penny. OR – you can fill a Louisville pure tap® reusable bottle 3,000 times for the price of a bottled water.
Louisville Water will provide free reusable Louisville pure tap® bottles to customers on Thursday, March 22. Stop by Louisville Water at 550 South Third Street from 8am - 5pm OR the Crescent Hill Reservoir from noon - 1pm.
