New Farmers Market Opens On East Market Street
Wednesday May 16, 2007
LOUISVILLE (May 15, 2007) – A new farmers market serving Phoenix Hill and nearby neighborhoods held its grand opening today.
Featuring fresh flowers, plants and home-grown fruits and vegetables, the market is located in the parking lot of the Felice Winery Complex, 829 E. Market St. The complex also houses Mellilo’s Italian Restaurant and The Bodega, a grocery/café. Louisville now has 13 farmer’s markets, from Portland to the Highlands, with others planned.
“Farmers markets are a great way to bring fresh foods and vegetables to Louisville’s neighborhoods,” Mayor Jerry Abramson said. “They’re also neighborhood gathering spots where friends meet.”
The Phoenix Hill market is especially notable, Abramson said, because it is located in a neighborhood that is witnessing a renaissance of new homes, condos and businesses. Phoenix Hill is home to the $233 million Liberty Green housing development, which replaces a former barracks-style public housing complex with new homes, apartments and condominiums.
In addition to serving Phoenix Hill and neighboring Butchertown, the farmers market is expected to attract downtown workers.
The market is open every Tuesday, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., now through October 30. Parking is available at the Felice site or on Market St.
